Mapping of Your Network Home Directory
Duke Sociology users may map their network home directory to laptop and personal desktop PCs.
If you are on campus and connected to Dukeblue wireless, you may map directly. This is a major convenience associated with use of Dukeblue, as the VPN is no longer required.
If you are off campus, you must first connect the Duke VPN client, then map.
It is presumed you have:
- A valid Sociology Domain account
- A valid Duke NetID
An installed and functional Duke-configured Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client
Again, if off campus, remember to first connect the Duke VPN client.
Described below are the steps for mapping your network home directory on a Windows 10, a Windows 7 or a Mac OS X system.
0.1. Mapping Under Windows 10
Click the Start icon in the lower, left corner, then click File Explorer.
Select This PC.
The File Explorer window modifies as below. Select the Map network drive option in the ribbon menu.
In the Map Network Drive window shown below:
select an available drive letter - typically H: to match the standard domain mapping used on department desktops
specify the folder path to your network directory - typically \\utopia3.soc.duke.edu\homes\lanhome
Leave Reconnect at logon unchecked
Check Connect using different credentials
Click Finish.
When prompted for credentials, enter your Sociology domain account userid and password, then click OK.
- A drive letter is added that maps to your lanhome directory.
0.2. Mapping Under Windows 7
Click on Start, then the Computer option. [NOTE: Instead of "Computer", this option is often labelled with the name of your computer.]
