Mapping of Your Active Directory Home Directory
Duke Sociology users have a personal Active Directory share for business storage purposes which may be mapped to laptops and home desktop PCs.
If you are on campus and connected to Dukeblue wireless, you may map directly. This is a major convenience associated with use of Dukeblue, as the VPN is not required.
If you are off campus, you must first connect the Duke VPN client, then map.
It is presumed you have:
- An active Duke NetID
An installed and functional Duke VPN client
Again, if off campus, remember to first connect the Duke VPN client.
Described below are the steps for mapping your network home directory on a Windows 10 or a Mac OS X system.
0.1. Mapping Under Windows 10
Select the File Explorer icon on the Windows task bar.
In the resulting File Explorer window, select This PC, then Map network drive.
In the Map Network Drive window below:
Select an available drive letter - typically H: to match the standard domain mapping used on departmental desktops.
Specify the folder path to the network directory - typically \\win.duke.edu\trinity\sociology\home\<netid>, where <netid> is your NetID.
To map to a subdirectory of your home directory, such as lanhome, add this to the end of the folder path.
Click Finish.
- An authentication dialog opens.
Enter win\ followed by your NetID into the User name field.
Enter your password into the Password field.
To avoid future authentication prompts, check the Remember my credentials option.
Click OK.
The "win\" prefix before your NetID ensures authentication to the WIN domain.
- Your selected drive letter is added to File Explorer with mapping to your home directory.
0.2. Mapping Under Mac OS X
Select Finder, then type command-K to open the Connect to Server dialog.
Enter in the Server Address field:
smb://win.duke.edu/trinity/sociology/home/<netid>, where <netid> is your Duke NetID
- This particular example directs mapping to your network home directory.
To map to a subdirectory of your home directory, such as lanhome, add this to the end of the address field.
Click Connect
- An authentication dialog opens.
Enter win\ followed by your NetID into the Name: field.
Enter your password into the Password: field.
To save your password (and avoid future authentication prompts) select the Remember this password in my keychain option.
Click Connect.
- The "win\" prefix before your NetID ensures authentication to the WIN domain.
When connected win.duke.edu is added to the Finder Locations list with top level share contents displayed in a browsable Finder window.
