Linux Services
The server infrastructure of the Sociology Department is Linux based. This infrastructure provides the following:
- Email accounts
- Web hosting for the department, affiliated programs and research projects, and personal home pages
- Network file services and backups for user home directories
- Network files services and backups for restricted data projects
- Access to a general login server for email, editing, web page modification, file transfers, printing and other general Linux tasks
- Login access to compute servers with statistical application support
- Online access to archival social science data, including ICPSR and other data resources
The point at which Sociology users most directly encounter Linux is when using the login and compute servers. The topics covered in this section are the essentials of Linux use - logins, basic command line use, editing, and printing.
