Audiovisual Resources in Room 268

Room 268 has a 75" LCD screen which supports two modes of display:

  1. Single-user, direct connect to a laptop via the HDMI cable located on the wall to the lower, right of the display. (An HDMI adapter is required if your display connector is of a different type.) Please do not leave this cable lying on the floor where it may be damaged. Please coil and hang it on the wall hook after use.

  2. Multi-user wireless connections to the display in a collaborative mode:

    • Up to 4 users may connect simultaneously.
    • A user may connect multiple devices.
    • Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS devices (such as laptops, tablets and phones) are supported.

    • Duke users connect through Dukeblue wireless. Non-Duke users connect through DukeVisitor wireless.

A small panel mounted below the right corner of the display controls operation.

1. Using the Display in Collaborative Wireless Mode

Collaborative use is supported by a hardware device called a Solstice Pod which hosts wireless connections to the display. When in this mode and before a collaboration session is opened, the monitor presents the Solstice Display Welcome Screen. This screen contains the network information and connection instructions required to open a session. An annotated sample screen is shown below.

If connecting for the first time, the Solstice Quick Connect page opens presenting the Get the App & Join button.

Once the app is installed, it remains available on your device for future sessions on any Solstice Display.

2. Basic Solstice Session Management

Establishing a session:

  1. Make sure the LCD display is powered on in wireless mode with the screen for Soc/Psych 268 showing.

  2. Launch the Solstice app on your device.
  3. If the Discovered Displays tab shows an entry for Soc/Psych 268, click the entry. If not, select the IP tab and enter the appropriate IP number from the LCD display.

  4. When prompted, enter the 4 digit screen key from the Solstice display (as noted above). This key randomly changes with each new session.

  5. When you join a collaboration a stylized, color-coded icon is added to the bottom of the Solstice display.
  6. If using a laptop device, select a share option for your Desktop, an Application Window or a Media File.

  7. If using a mobile device (phone or tablet), you can share the screen, a saved media file, or a currently active picture or video from the device camera.

  8. The border and pointer color of items you post to the display matches that of your icon.

Terminating a session:

  1. Stop sharing of all content to the display.
  2. Select the Disconnect option and click Yes to confirm.

3. Advanced Operations

As additional users login to a session, an icon for the user is added to the display. Each user accesses their participant menu by clicking their icon. Multi-user sessions expand collaborative possibilities, but introduce more complexity in content layout and management of the display.

See the online Solstice User Guide for advanced detail on session management.
